Root communication - Oak tree roots
Trees are not solitary objects but integrated communities whose lives are organised through roots and shared fungal networks. This image from Dendrophonia focuses on visualising tree roots to facilitate the storytelling of their communication. Trees share nutrients with stressed neighbours.
About Artist
Gayle Hallowell
I am a UK-based botanical artist and scientist, and have recently completed an MA in Photography at Falmouth University. My practice explores the relationships between plants, place, and process through both cameraless and camera-based techniques. Working with lumen prints, cyanotypes, chromatograms, and digital images, I create work that combines experimental processes with detailed observation. Rooted in research and observation, my work investigates the hidden structures and rhythms of plant life, seeking to make visible the often-overlooked systems that sustain and connect living environments.
