My interest in photography began with snapshots of friends and family, taken on Instamatic cameras bought from the local pharmacy. That interest deepened when I began using my grandfather’s SLR and learning about light meters, composition, and the qualities that make an image compelling. For a long time, the subject itself mattered less to me than the story unfolding within the frame. I learned to use light to create mood, and to position each subject so that their place in the composition became part of the story behind the image. Working with film was expensive, but those early experiments gave me a strong foundation for digital photography, where I had greater freedom to try, make mistakes, and learn from them. Beginning with a Sony hard-disk camera and progressing to DSLRs, I refined both my technical skills and my creative eye. I became more deliberate about the subjects I chose and learned to use shutter speed to freeze a moment or convey the energy of movement. For more than ten years, I worked in the marine sector, travelling around the world to photograph boats of every shape, size, age, form of propulsion, and speed. My extensive portfolio includes yacht and powerboat racing at events ranging from small local regattas to major international competitions, including the America’s Cup, the Volvo Ocean Race, the World Offshore Powerboat Championships, and Classic Yacht events. Today, I photograph whatever captures my personal interest. I am especially drawn to landscape and wildlife photography. I recently travelled to Antarctica via the subantarctic islands south of my home country, New Zealand, and images from that journey appear throughout my portfolio. Through every image, I aim to capture not only what a place or moment looks like, but what it feels like to be there.
