About Artist

Anne-Marie Etienne

As a child and teenager, Anne-Marie traveled extensively. Long, vibrant, and immobile journeys transported her from page to page, leading her to the fabulous worlds buried within the books of her library. With Joseph Kessel's lion at her side, she escaped into the wilds of Africa, wandering its golden savannas. She explored the lush jungles of Asia following in the footsteps of Rudyard Kipling, enchanted by the wisdom of the great elephant Hathi. She wept with Karen Blixen at the foot of the Ngong hills and traversed the arid expanses of the Dune deserts, magnified by the unforgettable work of Frank Herbert. To visualize her dreams, there were exhibitions and museums, where her mother, a painter, sought to pass on her love for art and images. Thus, she was immersed in the vibrant light of Paul Cézanne, the exoticism of 19th-century Orientalist painters, and the deep chiaroscuro of Caravaggio. Although her love for books always accompanied her, her scientific studies shaped the person we meet today. The technical foundations of photography were taught to her in engineering school. Understanding the laws of optics was certainly a very useful skill, but not necessarily the best introduction to the world of photographic art. For a long time, her camera was limited to capturing portraits of her children and holiday memories. It took a first trip to Southern Africa, discovering Namibia, for the desire to share her vision of the world and nature to become an obvious necessity. For the first time, she ventured into the lost worlds of her childhood, finally embracing the burning desire for Africa sown by her readings. Everything was both strange and familiar. Almost 10 years ago, Anne-Marie joined a photography club with her husband. Through image analysis and participation in national and international competitions, she honed her technique, learned from her mistakes, and gradually explored what truly resonated with her. The results of these competitions earned her the title of Master of the Photographic Federation of France, of which she has been an Ambassador since 2023. She has lived in Sanary for over 30 years. Ansel Adams and Nick Brandt have each left an indelible mark on her photographic practice. Ansel Adams' masterful work taught her the importance of technical mastery and composition. She understood the necessity of mentally visualizing the final result even before pressing the shutter. Anne-Marie is deeply convinced, as he himself emphasized with conviction, that she finds in her camera "an instrument of love and revelation." Nick Brandt, on the other hand, inspired her with his sensitive commitment and sharp sense of storytelling. His photographs possess immense emotional depth and transcend mere documentation. Brandt captures the soul of African animals in their natural environment, often with a powerful message of preservation. This resonated with her and reinforced her desire not only to showcase the beauty of nature but also to raise awareness of environmental issues. Anne-Marie Etienne has exhibited photographic series at numerous nature salons and festivals: Montier-en-Der, Phot’Aubrac, the Camargue and Rhône Delta Festival, the Bird Festival in the Bay of Somme, Spotnature, and more. Several of her photos have won awards at prestigious international salons such as the Memorial Maria Luisa in Spain, Glanzlichter in Germany, Xposure in the United Arab Emirates, the International Fotos Awards, and her book "Olkiramatian – The Maasai Way" received a gold medal at the Tokyo International Fotos Awards. Her recent book "Dans l'ombre des elephants" has won the second prize in Paris PhotoPrize in 2025. All her photographs and books are sold for the benefit of the French Association for Friedreich's Ataxia, dedicated to supporting patients with this orphan disease, particularly by funding research. Beyond financial support, it aims to draw public attention to this often-overlooked neurodegenerative disease. Thus, in each of her photos, Anne-Marie "does not wish merely to capture the beauty of the world, but to transcend aesthetics to touch hearts and change lives."
