Stephan Brigidi
Stephan Brigidi, born Providence, Rhode Island in 1951, received an MFA at RI School of Design 1976. He was Fulbright-Hays Fellow to Italy from 1977-78, and awarded a Photographer’s Fellowship from the NEA. He has been invited to artist residencies at MacDowell, Yaddo, and MASS/MoCA. Brigidi is a retired Professor of Aesthetics & Photography, and recently a visiting artist at the American Academy in Rome in 2023. A dedicated artist-educator with publications including, Angels of Pompeii in 1992, Remarkable People: A Rhode Island Family Album 1995, Afraid of the Dark: A Venetian Story, 2015, The Fire of Rome 2016, Portrait 2017, and ROME 1970s in 2019. His photography has been acquired by more than forty corporate collections and museums in the US and Europe. Brigidi was a founding member of the Bristol Middle Passage Port Marker Project, serving as the Chair of the Design Committee, charged with commissioning the sculpture installed at Independence Park in Bristol, in acknowledgement of the town’s history and to honor the Indigenous and African people harmed by the slave trade. He currently serves as an Advisor to the Board of Bristol Middle Passage, while acting as a Board Member of the RI Slave History Medallions and the Board of Discover Newport, a tourism and hospitality group. The recent activities of Stephan Brigidi include working with the Refugee Dream Center in Providence, and with Crossroads, Rhode Island, a homeless shelter. His past Board experience includes working with the ACLU, confronting racial profiling, and serving on several preservation committees in the town of Bristol. Brigidi was a co-author of Bristol’s Open Space Plan and has been an active advocate of environmental protections and architecture preservation.
