What Kept Me Going
When the pandemic hit New York City things just changed in a way that I don't think anyone ever predicted. All of a sudden we were forced to isolate from everyone. Not an easy task. I am so glad that I have my two kids and my film cameras to engage in a creative way to pass the time.
About Artist
Juan Valencia
I am a school teacher in New York City who does film photography as a hobby. You will always find me on my bicycle carrying one 35mm or medium format with me and stoping at every chance I have to create a photo. I am originally from Colombia but have been living in New York City for over 23 years. I am deeply influence from both worlds bringing a more traditional approach to the fast pace of living experience in a big metropolis like New York City. My photography is mostly in black and white, and I process my own film at my kitchen and print the images that call for it in a dark room that I have created in my basement. I love photographing in film because I let go of the results and focus on the process. It brings a lot of joy to forget about what I photograph and then see what comes out of it after some time has gone by.
