Rhythm of Devotion
Under the glow of floodlights at the Kumbh Mela, a sadhu beats his drum as ash clings to his body and the night hums with ritual energy. In the chaos of faith and gathering, his rhythm becomes both offering and anchor—an enduring pulse of devotion within a sea of humanity.
About Artist
Matt Landy
Matt Landy is an Australian documentary and travel photographer whose work explores the intersection of culture, humanity, and place. Based in Perth, Western Australia, he has spent over two decades photographing across more than fifty countries, drawn to environments where life unfolds with intensity, resilience, and authenticity. His photography is grounded in human connection. Whether working in the crowded streets of South Asia, remote mountain regions, or urban environments, Landy seeks moments that reveal the emotional core of a scene—expressions, gestures, and interactions that transcend language and geography. His images often focus on people navigating tradition, ritual, and everyday life, capturing both the extraordinary and the quietly profound. A significant body of his work has been created in Nepal and India, where he has documented festivals, spiritual practices, and daily life with a respectful and immersive approach. His long-term engagement with these regions reflects a deeper commitment beyond photography. Landy has led multiple photography tours to Nepal, with proceeds supporting IGWR-Nepal, a charitable organisation dedicated to improving the lives of disadvantaged children. Through this work, he has helped raise funds and awareness, reinforcing his belief that photography can be both a creative and humanitarian tool. Matt's visual style is characterised by strong composition, a sensitivity to light, and an emphasis on atmosphere. He often works in challenging environments—low light, crowded scenes, and unpredictable conditions—requiring instinctive shooting and technical precision. His images balance rawness with clarity, using contrast, texture, and timing to create photographs that feel immediate and immersive. In both colour and black and white, his work prioritises storytelling over aesthetics alone, aiming to draw viewers into the lived experience of his subjects. His photography has been widely recognised in international competitions and publications. He has received awards from the Mono Awards, Click West, and commendations from Australian Photography Magazine, among others. His images have been published and exhibited, reflecting a consistent dedication to craft and narrative. In addition to his photographic work, Matt brings a diverse professional background spanning education, business, and community engagement. This breadth of experience informs his ability to connect with people from all walks of life, an essential element in his photographic practice. He is also a regular presenter, sharing his experiences and insights with photography groups, organisations, and audiences interested in travel and visual storytelling. For Matt, photography is not simply about capturing an image, but about bearing witness. His work seeks to honour the dignity, complexity, and spirit of the people and places he encounters. Through his lens, he aims to create images that resonate beyond the moment they were taken—photographs that invite reflection, empathy, and a deeper understanding of the world.
