About Artist

George Herman

Photography has been a lifelong passion for George, beginning at the age of 10 when a neighbor introduced him to the art of developing and printing photographs in a well-equipped darkroom. Though initially working with others’ images, the experience ignited a deep appreciation for the craft. A year later, George acquired a Canon AE-1, marking the true start of a photographic journey that continues to this day. Early on, George found inspiration in the breathtaking landscapes of Ansel Adams, an influence that was solidified in 1979 when he had the rare opportunity to meet Adams during his visit to Washington, D.C., for a presidential portrait session. This encounter further deepened his commitment to the art of photography, leading to the construction of a personal darkroom and formal training through a two-year program at the Worcester (MA) Craft Center. In 1994, a visit to Yosemite National Park proved transformative. The powerful emotions evoked by seeing the landscapes Adams had immortalized led George to relocate to California, seeking closer connection to nature. However, constraints of space and time led to a temporary departure from film photography. The weight and bulk of traditional gear also became a challenge, prompting an eventual shift to mirrorless cameras. A renewed passion soon emerged—this time, in the dynamic world of street photography. For over five years, George was an active member of the Richard Dischler Photo Workshop, earning multiple awards for his evocative street images. Additionally, participation in three Bruce Gilden workshops refined his distinct approach to capturing candid moments with authenticity and impact. Now retired, George dedicates his time fully to photography, continuing to explore the world through a lens that blends technical mastery with deep artistic vision.
