Multiplicity of Self

Through water and reflection, the body fractures into parallel selves. The image explores identity as a construct — layered, unstable, and in constant negotiation between perception and truth.

About Artist

Nur Tucker

Nur Tucker is a British fine art photographer working across underwater, equine and wildlife disciplines. With a background in economics and over two decades in the financial markets in London, she brings analytical precision and emotional sensitivity to a practice that is both technically rigorous and deeply intuitive. Her work explores themes of identity, survival, heritage and the relationship between humans and the natural world. Whether photographing wild horses on the Anatolian plateau, Arctic wildlife in extreme conditions, or constructing staged underwater portraits, Tucker is drawn to environments that test both subject and photographer. She is particularly interested in the tension between control and surrender — a recurring thread in her visual language. Black and white photography holds a special place in her practice. By removing the seduction of colour, she reduces the image to structure, gesture, light and emotion. Form becomes paramount. Texture carries narrative weight. Shadow and negative space are used deliberately to create ambiguity and psychological depth. For Tucker, monochrome is not an aesthetic afterthought but a conceptual choice — a way of stripping the image back to its essence. Her long-term project on the Yılkı horses of Central Anatolia documents semi-wild horses that were once domesticated and later released to survive the harsh winters and predators of the plateau. The series examines endurance, cultural memory and the fragile boundary between civilisation and wilderness. The work has attracted interest from cultural institutions and international publishers and continues to evolve as both a visual and historical narrative. Tucker is also widely recognised for her underwater photography, where she experiments with reflection, refraction and light to question perception and identity. In these works, water becomes both a mirror and a barrier, fragmenting the figure and reshaping the self. Her wildlife images, often created in remote northern landscapes, reveal quiet, contemplative moments rather than spectacle — an approach that aligns with her broader interest in restraint and subtlety. She has exhibited internationally and her work has been recognised in major photography competitions. Beyond her personal projects, Tucker is an active advocate for photographic education and conservation storytelling. She frequently speaks about creativity, technical experimentation and narrative development within photography communities. Now working full-time as an artist, Tucker continues to travel extensively in pursuit of stories that lie at the intersection of resilience, nature and identity. Through monochrome imagery in particular, she seeks to create photographs that are timeless rather than topical — images that invite stillness, reflection and emotional connection.
