About Artist
James Flanagan
Jim Flanagan’s art is experiential and boundless, inviting viewers to immerse themselves in a world of exploration and meaning. As a self-taught painter, Jim embraces innovation and openness, challenging traditional artistic boundaries. He calls the viewer to the art form by translating his vision through color, texture, diverse techniques, and unconventional methods. He meticulously chooses materials that elevate everyday objects into cultural and artistic statements. Jim’s use of mixed media—including multi-dimensional compositions of glass, steel, wood, rubber, photography, and airbrush spray paint—defies the notion that an artist must be confined to a single style. His work is a tribute to artistic freedom, inspired by the Masters before him while forging a path uniquely his own. His inspiration is deeply rooted in people and cultures from around the world. Extensive travels across North America and Europe have broadened his artistic perspective, allowing him to absorb and integrate diverse traditions into his work. Whether sparked by an intuitive vision, a thought-provoking conversation, or an unexpected moment of inspiration, his creative process is driven by an insatiable pursuit of storytelling and emotional resonance. Born and raised in New Bedford, Massachusetts, Jim knew from an early age that art was his calling. He holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Massachusetts (formerly Southeastern Massachusetts University). Throughout his career, he has received numerous accolades, including the prestigious National Society of Illustrators Award, presented at the Norman Rockwell Museum in New York City. Through his art, Jim invites viewers on a journey—one that transcends borders, materials, and expectations—to discover the limitless potential of creativity.
