Hong Kong Shades
In the past, I captured reality in a very direct and documentary way. But when I began experimenting with this new dreamlike style, I found that I further want to explore ”dreams“ themselves as a form of reality. I am photographing the unconscious moment that exists between one state and the next.
About Artist
Eddie Law
Trained as a lawyer. Started getting into photography in 2000 when I was studying Master of Law in Hong Kong. At the beginning I learned from a Hong Kong old school darkroom and street photo master, and had my first exhibition in 2006 at the Hong Kong Fringe Club called "Hong Kong Street". During the pandemic I started an aggressive photo project called "Hong Kong Portraits Series" trying to photograph history through taking portraits of hundreds of people in Hong Kong with different backgrounds and interview them, which is still a work in progress. I noted that the first modern global pandemic occurred in 1919 when we already had cameras but without any group portraits record of it. And in 2019 we encountered the second one which was the very first one in human history that we could create a large scale portrait record of such an important event for the history. So I continued the project during the pandemic and nonstop up to now recording post-pandemic. In the past, I captured reality in a very direct, straightforward and documentary way (reference my other IG account: hkmasquerade). But when I began experimenting with a new hazy, dreamlike style, I found that I further want to explore ”dreams“ themselves as a form of reality. The process of creating these portraits is filled with interaction and spontaneity. I am not photographing a single fixed state of the subject, but rather the unconscious moment that exists between one state and the next — and it is in that unconscious moment in between that a special fragment of the subject’s true personality and inner world are revealed. So I have two directions in relation to my photography at present.
