James Michael Knauf (Jim) is a Southern California-based photographer and digital artist creating fine art photography that evokes wonder, scale, mystery, and the meeting of the natural and engineered worlds. Coming from an engineering/aerospace background, his work merges the idea of engineering precision with atmospheric, even cosmic emotion. His diverse work includes award-winning landscapes, night-scape astrophotography, and images of aerospace, city streets, and architecture. Selected works have appeared at the Palos Verdes Arts Center member shows, The Artists Gallery, Covet Gallery, Gallery of Hermosa, and Hugo Rivera Gallery, and other venues in Southern California; Decode Gallery, in Tucson, Arizona; and nationally in the pages of Aviation Week & Space Technology Magazine. James is Vice President of the Photographic and Digital Artists (PADA) group at the Palos Verdes Art Center. Artist's Statement My photography explores the intersection of nature, human design, creativity, curiosity, and emotion. The work encompasses night skies and Milky Way landscapes, moody black and white urban scenes and architectural abstractions, moments of flight in aviation and space launch, and certain digital composites. Eclectic, perhaps, but the world and our lives in it are inherently eclectic. The connective tissue across nearly all of these is a sense of threshold — of something or someone poised between two states: night and day, earth and sky, machine and nature, human and the vast, the chaotic, or the dangerous. My subjects may vary, but I’d like to think the emotional and conceptual concerns remain consistent on some level. I aim to create images that invite reflection and evoke wonder. Less about documentation than about atmosphere and emotional resonance. I want my photos to feel like being there, but not just what the scene looked like. Like a frame from a film, full of mood and narrative potential, especially in nightscape, street, and travel images. Scenes with depth and texture: layered compositions, strong lines, and details that reward a closer look. Or fleeting moments of flight captured with sharpness and clarity, celebrating the “wow” of human creativity and ingenuity on the way to space, in the air, and on the ground. Perhaps not all in every image, but at least some in all. In the end, photography is about how we move through the world, the places and phenomena that stay with us, and the small, extraordinary moments that appear when we slow down enough to notice them. Each image should be a reminder to slow down and notice what’s always been there — the extraordinary inside the ordinary. Photography isn’t just about seeing; it’s about experiencing.
