Thomas Brummett
Thomas’s series evokes the sensation of gazing into a star-filled sky, surveying a vast forest, or looking down from an airplane window- moments that remind us of our smallness within a world that is immense, infinite, and interconnected.

Q:
Can you please tell us more about creating your winning series, “The Murmur of a Thousand Suns"?
A:
I have been shooting in camera multiple exposures for years. This series is just an extension of this technique.

Q:
In your description of this series, you mention these were taken in a forest. Is the location where you took these images meaningful to you? Or do you look for specific starting points for creating abstracted images like this?
A:
I have created hundreds of works in the forest and river near my home. It's a sacred space for me. See River & Halos series as well as Murmur of a Thousand Suns.
Q:
Can you offer us more about why you make a decision of black and white over color in your work?
A:
It varies from image to image. My work is at the intersection of drawing and photography so this plays a big part in my decision making. B&W has a completely different and much larger emotional range than color.
Q:
What is your dream subject?
A:
My lifelong series called Rethinking the Natural, of which this image is a part.

Q:
What are you working on now?
A:
More "Infinite Systems," which I have been working on since the Infinities series.
Q:
Who are some photographers you admire?
A:
Starn Twins, Frederick Sommer, Harry Callahan, Minor White, Flor Garduno, and the amazing Ruth Thorne Thomsen.
