Every once in a while, you see a photograph rich enough in detail, tone, and texture that you can nearly smell, taste, or feel the subject. This image of sheep herders on their arduous daily journey is one of those images.

"Flock of Sheep"
Q:
Can you please tell us more about making your winning image, “Flock of Sheep”? Can you describe some of the sensory experiences in taking this photo, such as the smells, the energy, the light, etc.?
A:
While hundreds of sheep come to the village for milking every morning in the Tatvan district of Bitlis, they start their trip towards Nemrut Lake at sunset. Since the sheep herd's dusty journey was close to sunset, I had to take photos quickly without losing the light, so I followed the moving herd. I was exposed to way too much dust and heat on this trip.
Q:
Can you tell us more about the shepherds here or the way of life in this region?
A:
Every morning, Shepherds grazes the herd from the top of the Nemrut Mountain to the shore of Lake Van. At the sunset, they go back to the summit of Mount Nemrut and spend the night there. This is a very laborious and difficult job.
Q:
Who are some photographers, artists, or creatives that inspire you? What photographers, artists, creatives, or otherwise would you love to have a chat with?
A:
Ara Güler and Steve McCurry are the most notable photographers who inspired me to start photography. I would love to meet Steve McCurry.
Q:
What are you working on next?
A:
Going to South Sudan, Vietnam, and Morocco and taking photos.
Q:
What is your dream subject?
A:
The subject I dream about, if I can find the opportunity, is the life of cattle herders in South Sudan (Mundari tribe)
