A surrealist photo disguised as a snapshot, or a snapshot disguised as a surrealist photo, "Totalità," defies definition.

by Lily Fierman

"Totalità"

Q:

Can you please tell us more about making your winning image, “Totalità” ?

A:

This photograph is part of the Vedute Assolute project, which wants to address the theme of the essential dialogue between silence and emptiness through the objects of our everyday life, which become a metaphor for this dialogue, not to represent a purer reality but life itself in its simplicity or in its hidden complexity. The created tension gives intensity and imposes itself on the gaze without ornamentation.

My goal is to see and capture that lightning moment in which reality appears before us, free from the mental habits with which we usually perceive the world.

Q:

This image feels almost surreal. Additionally, as far a conceptual image, one often thinks of a more manipulated process, yet this image has a street sensibility. Can you tell us more about the mix of these two threads in your work?

A:

My photographic work always arises only from the need to capture with a shot that fleeting moment that presents itself to the eye. I simplify the forms more and more, eliminating details and maintaining only the essential[s] in a constant search for authenticity. The painter Giorgio Morandi (1890-1964) said, "I believe that there is nothing more surreal, nothing more abstract than reality." This sentence contains the meaning of my research.

Q:

Who are some photographers, artists, or creatives that inspire you?

A:

Sebastião Salgado, Vivian Maier, Letizia Battaglia, Henri Cartier-Bresson, and Ansel Adams

Q:

What photographers, artists, creatives, or otherwise would you love to have a chat with?

A:

Michael Kenna, Steve McCurry, or Sebastião Salgado

Q:

What is your dream subject?

A:

The chance to further explore my creative path and share my vision. My art is a reflection of the experiences and profound reflections I have made throughout my life through the teaching of Yoga with Master Beatrice Benfenati, Buddhist-oriented Meditation and the practice of Ki-Aikido under the guidance of Master Franco Bertossa.

Q:

What are you working on next?

A:

I am not interested in creating simply decorative or suggestive photographs. My goal is to see and capture that lightning moment in which reality appears before us, free from the mental habits with which we usually perceive the world.
