Grease ice formation in Recherchefjord, Svalbard. Grease ice is one step of the formation of sea ice: at first small, needle-like crystals (frazil ice) form in the top layer of the ocean. These ice crystals accumulate in supercooled freezing but still liquid water and give it a milky appearance.
