About Artist

Kieran Doherty

Kieran's involvement in photography started as a teenager after quickly realising that he didn't possess the requisite skills to fulfill his chosen career as an artist. He then discovered the camera and his original aim was to produce work to hang on people's walls. After a reality check and the need to earn a living, in 1993 he managed to gain a foothold into the intoxicating world of photojournalism where he remained at the Reuters News Agency as a specialist photographer until resigning his staff position in 2008 to become a freelance again, having covered stories as diverse as the Iraq war, the Asian tsunami and the Troubles in northern Ireland. Working for an international wire service afforded Kieran numerous exhibitions in places such as New York's Time Square, Perpignan's Visa Pour L'Image and London's National Portrait Gallery and publications in magazines such as Time, Stern, Newsweek, Der Spiegel, National Geographic and The Sunday Times magazine. In 2010 he was commissioned by the BBC Natural History's renowned cinematography unit to produce a stills tilt shift time lapse film for the episode 'Urban' from their groundbreaking series 'Human Planet'. This episode went onto to win the Emmy award for best cinematography in a factual based programme in 2011. From February 2010 until August 2011 Kieran chronicled the high street of the small market town of Wootton Bassett during the repatriations of British Service Personnel from the war in Afghanistan. His work resides in numerous private collections and in the British Royal Household and Parliamentary permanent archives. Kieran's eccentric photo essay on tennis fans at the Wimbledon Tennis Championships won him a first place World Press Photo award in 2015. His body of work from the Wootton Bassett repatriations was acquired in 2016 by the Imperial War Museum's Contemporary War Photography collection and his most recent body of work 'A Corona Diary' has been awarded in the prestigious Pictures of the Year International (POYI) 2022. Kieran continues to pursue and tell stories of human resilience.
