Daniel Biber - RAW is ART Photography Daniel Biber is not an ordinary photographer. Rather a photographic hunter and gatherer. Someone who travels thousands of kilometers every year by bike and on foot on a visual journey of discovery. A storyteller, visionary and advocate of the unadulterated beauty of the world. Through his lens, we not only see images, we also experience a world full of emotions and insights that inspire us to look at our surroundings with different eyes. The German professional photographer opens up a broad photographic spectrum for us. He becomes enthusiastic about analog photography and darkroom technology at an early age. Scientific photography is an integral part of his work during his studies in aerospace engineering. From 2008, Biber gets into the world of digital photography, which further inspires his artistic expressiveness. His talent and dedication are finally rewarded. He enters his first impromptu photography competition in 2015. He is shortlisted and his work is exhibited publicly for the first time. His breakthrough comes in 2017, when Biber wins the overall title in the international bird photography competition organized by the Swiss Ornithological Institute in Sempach. A turning point. He receives offers, signs a contract with a British photo agency and becomes a member of the professional photographers' association Freelens and VG Bild-Kunst. He soon achieves further international success, including the "Bird Photographer of the Year 2018" and the Sony World Photography Awards 2018 (Professional Competition). His spectacular nature photographs go viral and attract worldwide attention. Since 2019, he is managing his own distribution again and sells global image rights, fine art prints and exquisite limited photo editions in very small print runs. Biber's aspirations go far beyond mere photography. His approach, which he defines as "RAW/ART", is a fusion of his analog roots with the possibilities of the digital era. For him, "RAW" does not only mean the raw format of the image file, which serves as the basis for the "development" of the final photo. RAW also describes the retention of his analog principle: a good picture is primarily the result of a creative act during shooting. He not only refrains from manipulating the image to change its meaning, but also barely uses artificial light sources. He edits his pictures only marginally aiming to preserve the authenticity of the moment. It is only in the second step that the "ART" develops from Biber's creative interpretation of his RAW images. This often lies hidden in the everyday or the ordinary. He allows us to participate in his point of view in the sense of an aesthetically perfected understanding of art: "Non-Contemporary Art" instead of “Contemporary Art”. In Biber's view, people in general and art in particular tend to place themselves at the center and view everything from their perspective. As if everything must always revolve around the "so-called" Homo Sapiens! Critically, he adds: "Art does not have to be disruptive. Art may celebrate the immanent aesthetics of the motif in an artistically and technically appropriate way." As an artist and nature photographer in the Anthropocene, Biber wants to capture the beauty and diversity of nature. At the same time, he reflects on the effects of human activity on the environment. His images are not only aesthetic masterpieces, but also a call to rethink and appreciate our natural resources.
