Dancing Houses

The iconic, leaning and crooked structures of the canal houses in Amsterdam are caused, primarily, by sinking wooden pile foundations in soft swampy soil. Over centuries, these poles can rot or shift, causing the building to shift unevenly. Giving them the nickname of Dancing Houses.

About Artist

Gordy J Mackay

Based in Aberdeenshire, Scotland, I began my photography joyrney in 2021 and work primarily in architectural, seascape and fine art black-and-white photography. Much of my work is shaped by the Scottish coastline, with a particular focus on Aberdeenshire, where changing light, weather and form play a central role. Architectural subjects are explored wherever location allows, drawing attention to structure, geometry and contrast across a range of built environments
