Yichen Wang works across photography, moving image, installation, and digital media. Her practice begins at the moment a person becomes an image. Drawing from experiences of womanhood, queerness, and cultural dislocation, she examines how private experience is translated into visible form, and how that translation is shaped by gendered expectations, social recognition, and the desire to belong. Across Wang’s work, looking is never neutral. A portrait can become a measure, a screen can become a mirror, and a familiar gesture can harden into discipline. She traces the point at which an external gaze enters private life, until observation becomes self-surveillance and care becomes correction. Her subjects are repeated, obscured, fragmented, or held at a distance, revealing visibility as both a condition of recognition and a source of pressure. Photography anchors Wang’s practice, while moving image and installation allow images to unfold through time and space. Working with original footage and her own photographs, she uses filming, editing, repetition, layering, and montage to alter how an image is encountered and remembered. Still and moving images function less as evidence than as forces. They do not simply record experience; they shape the terms under which experience becomes believable. Rather than treating visibility as a simple form of freedom, Wang attends to its limits. Her work stays with the distance between living and being seen, asking what must be performed in order to be recognized, what is lost in becoming legible, and what remains unavailable to the gaze.
